Australian Chamber of Commerce Macau (AustCham Macau) will hold its next Power Hour talk at St. Regis Macao on 24 April, highlighting women in science.
The “Power Hour 40”, titled “Innovative Women in Science: Celebrating Female Experts in Medical and Astrobiological Research”, will be held in the Cotai hotel’s Amber Room on the 5th floor, featuring two speakers: Professor Marta Filipa Simões and Dr. Olivia Monteiro.
Simões works at the Macau University of Science and Technology’s (MUST) State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences. She has worked with various microorganisms mycobacteria, environmental and clinical bacteria, mycobacteriophages and filamentous fungi in the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Europe and across China. Her research focuses on astrobiology and astromycology, exploring fungal ecology and biodiversity in space analogs, fungal development in simulated outer space conditions and the bioprospection and application of filamentous fungi for planetary protection and human needs in space-like environments.
A professor at MUST’s Faculty of Medicine, Monteiro completed her undergraduate degree in biomedical sciences at the University of Aberdeen and she completed her PhD from the University of Edinburgh in 2010. With a primary focus on neuropharmacology and cognitive neuroscience, her laboratory investigates the impacts of early life adversities and neurodegenerative diseases on cognitive function.
In addition, Monteiro’s laboratory work explores the emerging phenomenon of long Covid within the population in Macau. Through her interdisciplinary approach, she aims to contribute to the advancement of both basic and clinical neuroscience, with the ultimate goal of improving cognitive health in individuals affected by cognitive impairments.
