Germany-based Chinese artist Wu Wei, one of the leading modern sheng players in the international music scene, is in town to collaborate with Macao Chinese Orchestra (MCO) for a special concert of wind instruments, titled “Whispers of the Wind”, which will be held in the Macao Cultural Centre’s (CCM) Small Auditorium this Saturday evening.
Sheng is a Chinese musical instrument consisting of vertical pipes.
Speaking to Good News Macau in an exclusive interview held at CCM in Nape on Wednesday, Wu said it was his expectation to be able to bring his idea to Macau and work with MCO using some installation.
“We use eight wine glasses to make amazing sounds,” the multi-award-winning artist said. And together with MCO players, he added, “They will make magic sounds … I think the audience has never heard such amazing things.”
Born in Gaoyao, China in 1970, Wu is a graduate of Shanghai Conservatory of Music and was a sheng soloist of the Shanghai National Orchestra. He received the German DAAD Cultural Exchange Scholarship to study at the Hans Eisler Conservatory of Music. Now based in Berlin, he blends jazz, classical and nature vibes with the sheng instrument, creating music that feels both timeless and cutting-edge.
Under Wu’s direction, Saturday’s 90-minute concert will cover a wide range of performance styles, promising a rich repertoire that will showcase the unique and infectious sounds of different wind instruments.
Organised by the city’s Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), the concert will start at 7:45 pm and is restricted to audiences aged 6 and above.
