Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng said during the recent launch of Macao Union Hospital (previously known as Islands Healthcare Complex Complex – Macao Medical Centre of Peking Union Medical College Hospital) that the new hospital located in Cotai was a significant milestone in healthcare cooperation between Macau and the mainland, reflecting the successful practice of “One Country, Two Systems” in the Macau SAR. The Macao Union Hospital was officially launched for trial operations on 20 December, the 24th anniversary of the Macau SAR’s establishment.

Ho said the Macao Union Hospital has multiple responsibilities. First, as a public medical institution, its priority is to provide high-quality healthcare, and further options for medical services, to Macau residents. The new facility is also to enhance Macau’s capacity to provide critical-care and specialist medical services, thus effectively improving the Macau residents’ health and overall wellbeing.

The hospital’s second responsibility is to build upon the brand image of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, and commit to developing the facility into an international and influential first-class medical centre in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

Third, the new facility shall draw upon the expertise and technologies available via the top-class medical team of Peking Union Medical College Hospital. This would help provide high-level, diverse training opportunities for local medical professionals, via a broadened development platform, and enable establishment of a medical-talent echelon, and so jointly facilitate the high-quality development of Macau’s healthcare industry.
