Macau’s Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng (pictured, right) had a meeting with Portuguese Minister of Justice Rita Alarcão Júdice (pictured, left) at the Macau Government’s Headquarters on Monday, during which they exchanged views on promotion cooperation between the SAR and Portugal in judicial, economic and trade matters.
Ho pointed out in the meeting that since its establishment nearly 25 years ago, the Macau Special Administrative Region has strictly implemented the principles of “one country, two systems” and the Basic Law of Macau SAR, which has based its legislative work on existing laws and tailored them according to its own needs.
He expressed gratitude to the Portuguese Ministry of Justice for its strong support in relation to Macau’s recruitment of Portuguese judges and prosecutors.
Ho added he looked forward to continuing the exchanges and cooperation between the two sides in the fields of economy, trade, tourism, culture, healthcare and education.
He particularly encouraged Portuguese technology and “big health” companies to explore business opportunities in Macau and in the Guangdong-Macau Intensive Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, underlining that the zone aimed to complement Macau’s appropriate economic diversification effort.
Meanwhile, Júdice said she was honoured to visit Macau on the occasion of the Day of Portugal, and the 500th anniversary of the birth of Luís de Camões. She hoped her visit would further strengthen the exchange and connection between Portugal, Macau and other parts of Asia in the field of judicial affairs.
The meeting was also attended by Macau’s Secretary for Administration and Justice Cheong Weng Chon as well as Portuguese Consul-General to Macau and Hong Kong Alexandre Leitão, along with the Director of the Office of the Minister of Justice of Portugal, Elsa Martins.
