As a judge for 38 years, I have encountered every type of lawyer imaginable, but none whose story is more inspiring than that of Ana Victoria Espino de Santiago, the world’s first lawyer with down syndrome, the late American judge and politician Frank Caprio once said.
Born to Maristol de Santiago Ochoa and Jesus Espino Zapata on 30 January 1999 in Zacatecas, Mexico, Ana Victoria (pictured) faced challenges due to her down syndrome conditions from an early age, but her limitations were never going to obstruct her from achieving her dreams in life.
To avoid discrimination, she completed her high school education online, allowing her to “focus on her studies without the added pressure of navigating social stigmas”, the Observer Diplomat reported.
With the help of a dedicated professor, she studied law at Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas, graduating with her law degree in July last year. Now aged 26, Ana is not only the first practicing lawyer with down syndrome in Mexico and the world, she has spoken in legislative forums and plans to advocate for the rights of people with disabilities, according to various reports.
Ana’s journey is a “testament to the power of belief, passion, and the refusal to accept limitations”, She Sight magazine underlined.
This inspiring story is truly the embodiment of the statement: “When there’s a will, there’s a way”.
