A 41-year-old Indonesian migrant worker named Eva Yuliani is among locals competing in The Voice of Macau, which was launched by local broadcaster TDM earlier this year. The East Java native – who has been working in Macau for around three years as a domestic helper – first sent her video singing Debby Boone’s classic “You Light Up My Life”, prompting the producer to call her for a live audition.
Singing the same song during the live audition, she wowed the three judges and has since received a call back for the second round of the singing competition slated to take place on 24 November. Yuliani told Good News Macau she was “surprised, happy, nervous and touched” to make it through to the next round.
“I never thought I could join a singing audition and make it through,” she said. “I joined to improve my singing talent,” focusing more on the journey and experience rather than simply winning the competition. “Winning or losing is part of a competition … even if I have to lose, I know I have won in defeating my fear of going through an audition process,” she added.
Yuliani also underlined, “As a foreigner, I have only a few [local] friends and no relatives, while the competition is based on public voting, so my chance of winning is quite small. However, I’m already happy to have a chance to join this competition without any discrimination.”
The Voice of Macau is sponsored by MGM among other sponsors and supporters. Despite its name, the competition is not part of the Dutch reality singing contest franchise “The Voice”, which has been held in different countries. (Wong Kin Ang)
