A video showing a long-lost egg-laying echidna was captured by a 25-person expedition team in the Cyclops Mountains in Indonesia’s Papua Province recently. The critically endangered Attenborough’s long-beaked echidna was seen for the first time in more than 60 years during the team’s nine-week expedition led by James Kempton of Oxford.
Despite the discovery, however, the critically endangered status of the mammal is unlikely to change anytime soon, especially with the species not protected under Indonesian law, said Kempton. The species are part of the only group of living mammals that lay eggs instead of going through live birth, according to a report by NBC News.
