Macau may get its first typhoon in the next few days as a low pressure area in the central South China is developing and is expected to gradually develop into a tropical cyclone within 800 kilometres of Macau in the next two days, the SAR’s Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) has stated on its website.
The bureau will issue Tropical Cyclone Signal No. 1 accordingly, with the system expected to move towards the area between Hainan Island and western Guangdong later this week, according to SMG’s website, updated at 5:30 pm today.
Moreover, SMG will closely monitor the region’s weather development this week.
Meanwhile, the neighbouring SAR’s Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) has also issued a statement regarding the low pressure, pointing out that the observatory will issue the Standby Signal No. 1 in Hong Kong between Tuesday night (10 June) and early Wednesday (11 June) the earliest.
In addition, HKO will assess the need of issuing a higher Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal later on Wednesday to Thursday. (Gilbert Humphrey)
