Macau’s Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai has, on behalf of the Macau SAR Government, expressed “profound grief” over the death of former Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Tung Chee Hwa (pictured), who was also Hong Kong SAR’s first Chief Executive.
Sam said in a press release issued by Macau’s Government Information Bureau (GCS) that Tung was an “outstanding contributor to the implementation of the ‘One country, two systems’ principle, a renowned patriot, and a distinguished social leader”.
He added that the former Hong Kong CE had “steadfastly supported the country’s reform, opening up, and modernisation” and played a vital role in strengthening exchanges between China and countries around the world.
Sam also said that Tung was dedicated to fostering closer ties and mutual development between Hong Kong and Macau, as well as supporting the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) and the integration of both SARs into overall national development.
Furthermore, he described Tung as an “inspiring role model for future generations”, pointing out that the latter’s remarkable achievements and noble character would always be remembered.
Tung passed away in Hong Kong on Tuesday at the age of 89.
