Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes (pictured, second from left) highlighted women’s empowerment in Macau’s tourism-related sectors during the 2nd Regional Conference on the Empowerment of Women in Tourism in Asia and the Pacific in Bali recently.
Senna Fernandes spoke at a panel discussion titled “Sustainable and Inclusive Tourism: Discussing women’s roles in promoting sustainable tourism”.
According to her, at present, female professionals constitute over half of the workforce in the SAR’s tourism and related sectors, while over 50 per cent of visitors to Macau are also women. Senna Fernandes also said MGTO’s marketing team comprises mainly female staff members, while in both local public and private sectors “many female leaders are making a considerable impact”.
Organised by the UN Tourism, the conference was held from 2-4 May. It is one of UN Tourism’s major events in the Asia-Pacific region, covering a range of topics including women in tourism industry leadership, women’s role in fostering sustainable tourism development, education and training for women’s participation in the tourism sector, safety concerns for female travellers, as well as accessible travel opportunities for women.
