The Overseas Vietnamese Association of Macao held a double celebration for the local Vietnamese community marking the Labour Day (1 May) and Vietnam’s Reunification Day at the Clementina Leitão Ho Brito Theatre on Avenida de Artur Tamagnini Barbosa yesterday, which was also attended by several consular officials from the Vietnamese Consulate-General in Hong Kong.
Also known as the Liberation Day, the Reunification Day is a public holiday in Vietnam marking the capture of Ho Chi Minh City (then Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam) on 30 April 1975 by the North Vietnamese and VietCong forces, which eventually led to the reunification of South Vietnam and North Vietnam on 2 July 1976, creating the modern-day Vietnam, according to Wikipedia.
Meanwhile, the local Vietnamese association’s president, Duong Trung Duc, said in March that there were around 7,800 Vietnamese people working in Macau – mostly as domestic workers – and several hundred Vietnamese nationals holding Macau ID cards. (Gilbert Humphrey)
