The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) hoisted Tropical Cyclone Signal No. 1 at about 10:30 pm last night as the tropical cyclone entered within the distance of 800 km from Macau, with the signal scheduled to remain in effect throughout today. As of 8 am today, the tropical cyclone was located about 710 km southeast of Macau and is expected to move northwest towards the area between Hainan Island and the west coast of Guangdong province as the cyclone is predicted to gradually strengthen in the coming few days.
Under the influence of the typhoon’s associated outer subsidence airflow, the weather in town will be “extremely hot” today and the high temperature may trigger thunderstorms with strong gust in the afternoon, the bureau has pointed out.
According to the bureau’s tropical cyclone track forecast, as it gets closer to Macau, the cyclone will develop into a tropical storm tomorrow (16 July) and “severe” tropical storm on Monday (17 July), meaning that there is a possibility of Typhoon Signal No. 8 issued in the next few days.
In addition, under the joint effect of storm surge and astronomical tide, flooding might occur in the Inner Harbour area with flooding levels between 0.3 to 0.7 m on Monday and Tuesday.
