An ancient painting believed to be the world’s oldest artwork has recently been discovered by scientists in an Indonesian cave located on Sulawesi Island, suggesting that Europe was not where cave art first emerged, according to a report by Al Jazeera.
Depicting three people gathered around a large red pig (measuring around 92 cm by 38 cm), the painting is predicted to have been created about 51,200 years ago, according to research published on Wednesday.
The artwork was reportedly found in poor condition inside the Leang Karampuang cave in the Maros-Pangkep region of South Sulawesi province. It is thought to be made by the first group of humans who moved through Southeast Asia before arriving in Australia about 65,000 years ago.
