British Chamber of Commerce (Britcham) Macao will present a talk about the history of piracy in Macau, with University of Macau (UM) assistant professor Nathan Kwan scheduled to be the speaker. Kwan specialises in studying the maritime history of the Qing Dynasty in the Pearl River Delta and he holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas, Austin, a Master’s degree from Harvard University and PhD from King’s College London and the University of Hong Kong. His presentation will examine the city’s era of pirates from the 16th to the 20th century and its impact on Macau’s development. In the process, it will seek to recover an often overlooked yet important aspect of the city’s maritime heritage.
